Monstera is an indoor plant that is known by many names such as Swiss Cheese or a Hurricane plant or Delicious Monster whereas Its scientific name is Monstera Deliciosa. A tropical plant that hails from the rain-forests of Southern Mexico and Central America. The beauty of the plant can take you by surprise and for that reason alone this plant has taken over most homes and Instagram pages in its grasp.
Let’s look at the 10 interesting things about the Monstera Deliciosa.
1. Monstera fruit is deliciosa. (haha, I meant delicious)
MD means a Delicious Monster, unripe fruit produces Oxalic acid that can remove the rust from metal and bleach wood. When ripe, the fruit can be as delicious as other tropical fruits such as pineapple or coconut. To get it to ripe just right, place it inside a jar and cover it in a brown bag. Soon the scales will begin to drop off from one end to another. With a gentle push the scales to should just fall off, that’s your sign.
2. Monstera holes or fenestration in the plant is not useless.
The natural habitat where the plant grows is tropical rain-forests that experience torrential rains and heavy winds. Fenestration in the plants allow natural elements to pass through without struggle and causing less harm to the leaves. It is because of the holes is why they are called Swiss Cheese plant.
3. Monstera Deliciosa can grow as tall as 60 feet and more.
Monstera has become the most popular house plant considering the fact that this is a rare plant in the wild. We are able to provide suitable growing conditions at home without natural affects that would kill the plant. It grows quickly from a cutting whereas in the wild it has to grow from a seed making it difficult to survive. Even though the conditions are right every potted house plant will have its limitation to the size. In the wild, when the plant is about 15-20 cm, it has to find a tree to grow on to survive. When it does, it can reach a height of over 60 feet (20 Meters).
4. Monstera’s love humidity!
I live in the city with 4 months of winters that make the plants hard survive and in the summer month the dryness. It comes as no surprise because the plant originates from tropical zones with high humidity levels. During winters I pull them away from the windows and place it in a warmer corner of the room providing it artificial light and raise the humidity levels with a humidifier.
5. Plant needs support to grow (Yours and a moss stick’s).
Monstera is a delicate and a hearty plant, in most conditions it will grow amazingly well but when ignored it will struggle to survive. In most cases the plant will grow well without any physical support, however, if we were to imitate its natural growing conditions providing medium to bright light, humidity and a physical support for the plant to grow you will see the plant flourish. It is a known fact that when the plant grows on a support and climbs upward, the leaves are bigger and broader with better fenestration.
6. Aerial roots have a mind and uses.
Typically, aerial roots can destroy the surface they are attached to and just imagine how hard it is to remove the ivy from anything it attaches to. However, the aerial roots of monstera are gentler when compared with other plants. They will not damage your furniture or interior at the same time providing extra support and additional food source for the plant. They are also known for its mimbre furniture and baskets too.
7. Eating it can Sting!
Pretty much the entire plant contains Calcium Oxalate crystals, this is toxic when fresh and if ingested, it makes the tongue, mouth and throat will feel like a thousand needles piercing in to them. The calcium oxalate can be easily broken down by thoroughly cooking or fully drying and it can be safe to eat the plant. It has been known to provide relief from arthritis, gout, kidney stones and a few more. However, it is best to leave to the experts to turn the plant into a medicine.
Ensure to keep your pets and children away from the plant and far from their reach.
8. Let there be light!
We know that the plants require light in order to photosynthesize, that’s the way of the plants to create food. Understanding where the naturally plant grows help a great deal in knowing what kind of light environment to provide for your plant can be highly beneficial. These plants grow under huge trees that ensure that the plant doesn’t get direct sunlight. It is mostly filtered, thanks to the shade provided by the canopy of the big trees. Keeping the plant away from direct afternoon light will be immensely important to avoid browning of leaves. A monstera can grow anywhere in the house, however, when given ample filtered light will enable the plant to grow better, faster and fuller.
9. Monstera Medicine (Really!)
This Swiss cheese plant has medicinal benefits, it seems strange considering that it is also poisonous. A lot of tropical plants do have medicinal properties and applications, Monstera is no different. Some known treatments are snake, insect and spider bites along with some application for the people suffering from Arthritis. However, this is done in native countries and with sufficient knowledge of medicine, i am not trying this at home. Let’s leave this one for the experts, shall we.
